I had this issue…..very frustrating!
I found, at least with my car, the ignition must be turned off. Once the ignition is off everything works as it should…i thought it was an issue only with my car and was have it looked at at my first service interval….apparently I’m not the only one.
I completely agree with you, this is the only solution I have found. I’ve had this problem 4-5 times in 7 months of ownership.

Last night at the airport I could not load luggage. NOTHING would open the liftgate. Engine is running. All doors are unlocked. Nothing obstructing the liftgate. Three beeps is all that happens with the button on the liftgate or the button on the keyfob. Had to put suitcase on the back seat or risk getting towed. So, today, car is parked in the driveway. Unlock all the doors, walk around to the tailgate, and push the button. Three beeps is all I get. When I push the button on the liftgate, I want it to open, and I don't want to be forced to use the stupid, over-sized keyfob. What am I missing?
If my theory is correct, you have one or more family members who use or may have loaded things into the back... They may have pulled/pushed the lift gate at some point rather than letting the motor do it all...

I locked up my liftgate by absent-mindedly pulling down on it rather than pushing the button. after that, beeps & no movement despite all efforts. I very gently manually lowered it all the way to "lock" and then got inside, started it, and pushed the lift button and it's worked ever since.

Of course this is only a theory.

That is not the problem.

Not common, but isolated to a few unlucky owners.
When does a few become a noticeable or troubling pattern? It's affecting my CX-50 too. Occasionally, nothing will release the trunk, and I have to spend time shutting engine off, on, trying 3-5 things to get this simple function to....well....just work as designed.

I'd honestly return the car to have a manual-only lift release attached to the exterior of the vehicle like my last SUV as it worked 100% of the time. It's been one of my few real frustrations with my CX.

I am the only one that drives my vehicle. I park in my level driveway and cannot unload my groceries. Same as everyone else. No, it's not a low battery in the car or the key fob. Nobody is yanking on the door. None of the guesses in this thread. My car is 4 months old. As someone suggested, Mazda will figure it out eventually.

I love the car other than that, you have to get a turbo to get a heated steering wheel and my hood has tiny dents all over it from freaking acorns! I've lived in the same place for 30 years and have always parked in the same spot, and have NEVER gotten dents from acorns! Did they make the good out of aluminum foil?

I also have ongoing problems with the liftgate, intermittent 3 beeps and won't open, my car is currently with the dealership going on 3 weeks now. They replaced the battery, a control module and now ordering a new liftgate piston. Between this and a rattling sunroof, my car has been in the shop a lot, 6th trip for warranty work. This latest one with the lift gate seems to have them stumped. I have 2 other Mazdas and they both have had 0 warranty work and no issues in 5 years. The only thing I find different about the CX-50 aside from being a new model is it was built in the US instead of Japan, I feel the quality is off compared to others. I'll post back if the dealer finds a solution to the liftgate.

This just happened to me. How did you correct this?

Just received my car back from the dealer after 1 month I believe they may have found the problem; as mentioned before they previously replaced the battery and lift gate control module, this time they replaced:

VA41-62-6EX - Slider, Power Lift Gate

It's been a few days and so far so good, finally!

Turn the car on & start it (if not already), then turn in off again & back on.
I had to do that same thing (turning ignition off and back on) on my CX-50 too. It's happened 3 separate times since my wife and I bought ours a year ago. Also, the gas tank lid along the driver side wouldn't open the other night attempting to fill the tank! I had to hit unlock on the key fob again a couple times to get it to open.

Ugg, I thought the small cabin and uncomfortable seats were the only things I had to deal with on this car. Thinking I needed the CX-90, bit worry that's a mistake too.

I believe this is the issue. I checked my voltage and the battery was at 12.1. Dealer said that's fine but after running the car for a bit it started to work, this was the only way for me to open it. I've had the vehicle for 3 weeks. I've also had issues when I turn the vehicle off I get a message that says "vehicle not switched off" randomly.

There is a rare issue with the CX-5(s) where the 'Park' switch is misadjusted and doesn't always register that the vehicle is in park. If this happens to you again, try wiggling the shifter while in park and turn the car off again. If that fixes it, go back to the dealer to tell them what's happening and have them fix it.
