Wireless Charging Pad

Has anyone installed the wireless charging pad in their CX-50? I have a Preferred Plus that was delivered without the charger but I was told it could be added. I confirm compatibility so I just purchased. However, after reviewing the installation instructions (fairly straightforward with a lot of disassembly) the last step is to update MDARS to activate the charger. I do not have access

That charger is terrible. It overheats and inconsistently charges any phone I put on it.

I ordered a 12 Volt to Magsafe off of Amazon. It is flexible metal covered. I plan to plug it into the 12 Volt behind the cup holder area, then fold it back and make it neat, then just snap my phone on it and use wireless carplay each day. That will charge much faster and be reliable.

For what it's worth, I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max and the charging is poor with or without a case. It just overheats. I will just use the wireless pad for storage of things I need quick access to.

Just don't want you to go to all this trouble and be disappointed.

Can you share the installation instructions, mine is in but I am thinking about trying to modify it.
It’s been my experience the wireless charger is not worth it. It’ll work for a few minutes and then gets too hot and shuts down.

Seems many are having that issue.
Just in case it hasn’t been made clear, I’ll go ahead and chime in. The included wireless charger is absolutely useless. I disabled mine and will just use the slot for phone storage since it is a good spot for that
So, weird thing has happened with my wireless charging pad. I have had the car almost 7 weeks. When I first got the car, it behaved like everyone says. You would get maybe 5-10 minutes out of it before it overheated (I assume) and started flashing red. Sometimes repositioning the phone got it to work and sometimes it just wouldn't start up.

About 3 weeks ago I noticed it started charging properly for longer periods of time. My commute is about 45 minutes and the charger would not start flashing red until the last 10 minutes or so. And now the last week and a half, it is almost always working. I cannot understand what changed. The weather has been hot (as hot as 116) and mild (low 80s) in that time.

I do have the latest software for my phone (iPhone 13 Pro) and infotainment. I am using an Apple leather case. Car is about 7 weeks old and has 2500 miles.

I still would not recommend purchasing it as an accessory, but I am crossing my fingers that my luck holds!

You aren't the first I've seen to report that odd quirk. I upgraded from my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 14 Pro and am hoping that it plays more nicely with the car charger (but haven't yet had a long enough drive to test things out).

It struck me that it is possible that larger camera bumps might be contributing to charging issues. Depending on the added height, that could raise the phone's charging ring area enough to impact proper and efficient wireless charging.
