I noticed the other night that light sources are being doubled by my windshield. For example, headlights of oncoming cars appear twice, the actual lights and then a ghosting of the lights just below them. It’s worse from distance and the lights come together as the source gets closer. I have looked and it seems a common issue for cars with HUDs.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this a defect or just normal?

I haven't noticed this myself (yet??), but after some Googling found that is indeed a not uncommon complaint for a lot of cars and not just those with HUDs. A lot of theorizing that it is caused by the nature of laminated windshield glass layering/curvature, eye glasses (removing them stops the doubling), LED headlights/taillights being more prone to causing this and driver/seat height (more accurately, the height at which the driver's vision is through the windshield). Same reports as you that the effect lessens the closer the light source gets. Reports also that tint films stop the effect and people have tested that with a temporary strip of clear packing tape across their vision line.

Thanks for the info! That’s about what I saw, though not the stuff about the tint. It’s not too bothersome. And I do wear corrective lenses so that could contribute to it it sounds like.

You are welcome. I wear multifocal contact lenses (both eyes corrected for both near & far), so unsure if that makes any difference in the perception of this doubling.
