This morning, with the sun's early morning glare in my face, I edged too close to the inside curb at about 30mph. That would've been OK, except the curb (tarmac) was broken and jutting out. I caught the sharp edge with both inside tires. Instant double flat. I've now taken the wheels off and checked... fortunately, the wheels themselves were mostly saved by the tires (just a tiny bit of rash - about 1/2" long - on one wheel), but both tires have a 'scissor' cut on the walls, so are shot. Only 500 miles on them!

Time to start investigating replacements.

Ugh.

Forgot to add... does anyone know where to place jackstands on the car? When taking the rear wheel off, I couldn't see anywhere to safely put stand(s) while the wheel was off.

There are specific jacking locations on the chassis. Typically a foot or so behind the front wheel and a foot or so in front of the rear wheels.

With only 500 miles, you could certainly buy only two matching Original Equipment tires and be fine. Unless you prefer buying something different? If you buy a set of 4, what type of requirements would you have? Traction? Life? Performance?

No, I don't mean jacking locations (on the pinch welds) I mean to put Jack STANDS - for safety support AFTER you jack up the vehicle. I can't drive the car, so I'll have to take off all 4 wheels and transport them to a tire place.

I'll probably go with 4 tires now since I'd like to get both improved ride AND handling. At the moment I'm trying to decide between the Michelin Cross Contacts and the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S Plus. The former may have better ride and certainly longer life, but the latter are UHP A/S's so better performance and quite a bit cheaper!

I apologize, I must have not read that. However, the jack stand can be placed in the same spots.

OK, so an update:

I finally decided on Pirelli P7 All Season Plus 3 tires, based on Tire Rack reviews. They seemed to be the best combination of good drivability/handling and comfort, with the only ding being maybe a little less wet capability. Also, they are relatively cheap at $229 ea. shipped (from bestwheelsonline.com). On their way.
UPDATE: I changed my mind and cancelled that order. Got Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus tires instead. About $25 more per tire, but much more capable.

As for the jacking points, I found the Jacking page from my recent download of service manual pages. It seems that the pinch weld points ARE the jackstand points. The official shop jack points are actually in the center rear (under the diff) and the center front between the wheels (see attached). Who knew?

I had problems with my tire this week too, my wife drove over a hole and the tire slashed on the side, this is really interesting to see since my car also has very low mileage... could it be a more common problem?

The shop jack positions would be necessary since the lift arms would be inhibited if you used the pinch welds.

I had a similar problem early on with my CX50 I ended up replacing the rims and tires. I went with 18" wheels and Vredestein tires.
I'm much happier.
Good luck .

The title of this thread mislead me.
I was thinking they were shot at, as in with a gun.
Btw, thanks for those pics of the jacking points when using jack stands.👍
