The rear windshield was completely smashed and needs to be replaced. This was not my fault and will be covered through someone else. Should I go through the Mazda dealership or a company such as safelite?

Aftermarket providers may not even have access to the glass yet. But you can certainly check with Safelite first if you prefer them over the dealership.

I called the Mazda dealer and they recommended Safelite. It will take them at least a week though to get the windshield and make the repairs.

WARNING: Our CX-5 was the subject of a hailstorm back in Feb. Safelite came out to replace the rear glass and the work was fine, but the (aftermarket) glass was full of distortions. It's like looking through a funhouse mirror. They give you a warranty, so we called them back. Replacement glass they brought was just as distorted. We keep calling them out and every time (now 6 tries) the glass is bad. Now they are supposed to be getting us factory glass, but it's been 3 months now and radio silence.

Moral: If you get a replacement from them, make sure they are going to use factory glass!
