Rear brakes sticking?

836 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Litfuse
When the car sits for 12+ hrs, worse when it sits a day or two, and I put it in reverse to back out from the driveway, there is a distinctive pop sound when the car starts moving, that reminds me of what happens when one has a sticky caliper. I tried to release the parking break first before driving, but that makes no difference. There is always that tell-tale pop.

Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Electro mechanical parking brake releasing the calipers is what your likely hearing.

Happens on mine too, but ONLY after I've washed it or it's rained and the brakes are wet when the park brake is set and left to sit over night. FWIW, my HHR had the exact same issue and it had rear drum brakes.

Mine makes the same sound…especially when it sits out overnight after a rain.
My ‘16 Mazda3 manual w/mechanical parking brake does the same thing.
Will chalk it up as a quirk. :)
I agree it's the auto brake release and normal
Read another thread about these electro mechanical parking brakes. The other thread was saying these brakes being they lock up when parked could warp the rotors when brakes are hot. Wonder if this pooping noise is an electronic release or a brake stuck and because of movement pop? Has Mazda addressed it yet? Is this braking system new to Mazda? First I’ve heard of it.
This is caused by the metallic compound in the pads rusting to the rotors. It's been a thing for a long time but with mechanical brakes they did not have as much force on them so they didn't stick so aggressively. It's not an issue other than it being a bit annoying. Once the vehicle moves, the pads basically sand down any rust residue so it's cleans itself off as soon as you start moving.

Have yet to experience that particular issue with the 50, but our last three cx5s went thru brake pads more quickly than any car we’ve ever owned. Called it the Achilles heel of the car.
I love the brakes modulation it's like my wifes nissan. Coming from my Genesis which had grabby bbrakeslike so many others that would cause you to choke yourself by the seatbelt retracters was a immediate selling point besides the rest of the truck. Great job Mazda
Front or back brakes or both?
Both for the most part, but as the front brakes do most of the work, they were more noticeable.

This is a perfect explanation. Case closed.
