This thread is intended to allow people to post about any rattles they are experiencing and any fixes that have worked to quiet the little buggers. It is not intended to be a bash Mazda or CX-50 thread. Cars develop rattles and sometimes it is better to address it yourself than trying to get a dealer to track it down.

I got the idea for this from a reddit user, u/ilovestoride. They started a similar thread on r/CX50. Unfortunately, reddit threads don't have the staying power of forum threads, so I decided to duplicate it here. Here is a link to the original thread with photos and explanations:

Here are the ones that have been identified thus far:
  • Hood release cable under the drivers dash, far left. Wrap in foam tape.
  • Passenger side under the dash in the foot well. A vent is super loose. Use a think piece of foam to stabilize it.
  • Mount behind the rear view mirror can creek. Sliver of foam to stabilize.
  • Sunglasses compartment. Lining as many surfaces with felt can quiet it.
  • Center console lid produces clicks with elbow. No solution yet. Dealer suspects it is broken inside. Has had similar reports for this style of console lid.
  • Sunroof support. This one has a TSB. If you can demonstrate the rattle to the dealer, they have a fix that involves bending a clip.
  • Rear Liftgate: On the rear hatch on the lower part left side if your looking up when its open. Where the glass meets the plastic the plastic somehow popped out a bit. Just a easy push and it snapped back into position and no more rattling.
Please post any rattles you are experiencing and any solutions if you have them. As solutions are found, I will add them to this post.

I also have one rattle I cannot find yet. It appears to be in the passenger B-pillar. It is more like a metallic sound than plastic. Has anyone else noticed that and pinpointed where/what it is?

My most annoying rattle is from the rear hatch. When the hatch is open if you tap the plastics you can reproduce the sound. Smooth roads you dont hear but driving over lane markers you can. It just started within the last two weeks out of nowhere..

Have had my CX-50 Turbo premium for about 2 months and have not heard unexpected rattles, but last weekend noticed when driving at about 30 to 40 mph a rattling/vibrating noise is heard, even if I don't go over bumps on the road. The noise is not heard if going at a greater speed on the highway. Also, thd rattling/vibration noise sounds like plastic parts are making this noise, and not metal parts. Not sure which part of the cabin this noise is coming from, and any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Ok i discovered the issue here. On the rear hatch on the lower part left side if your looking up when its open. Where the glass meets the plastic the plastic somehow popped out a bit. Just a easy push and it snapped back into position and no more rattling. Weird how it even became that way.

Can you give a general area from where the noise seems to be coming from?

Inside the rear hatch where the glass meets the plastic on the lower trim part. There's a left and right side, kinda long and flat. Thats how i noticed it was bowed up a bit on the left side in the middle. I just cant figure out how that happened because the sound was relatively new.

Hey guys, I have a rattle that started a few weeks ago that I cannot seem to figure out. I currently have a CX-50 Turbo Premium with around 4,100 miles and the noise is prevalent around very specific imperfections/bumps on the road. It appears to be coming from the driver side headliner/weather strip or perhaps seatbelt area. I've tried to apply pressure to the weather strip, headliner and seatbelt plastic housing back make it tighter but nothing seems to be working. It honestly sounds like the weather strip is making the noise while it contacts the vehicle but I am not sure of the best approach to test this theory aside from removing the weather strip completely.

It's a very subtle noise that's not extremely obvious but it's very noticeable and annoying because it's right next to my left ear. I think the cold weather may have made it worse because the plastic/rubber is contracting rather than expanding.

To give an idea of where I think it sounds like when driving, please see the below picture. I took the photo from a stock image of the CX-60 but it looks relatively similar.

Have you tried getting your fingers wedged in between the top frame and window, then pulling the top of the door in toward your head? If that cures it, the door could be bent or misaligned.

I don't think I am able to replicate that but I believe I know what you are saying though. It seems like it may be the B-Pillar where I am able to accurately reproduce the noise or at least something tangible. The driver side B-Pillar is much noisier than the passenger side B-Pillar if I use my fingers/palms and press against the weather strip portion to sandwich the two components together. I recorded a video to give you a better idea of what I am talking about and it seems like that there is a lot of play/wiggle from the mid point up until the very top of the pillar. It's either that or something inside of the headliner that is loose as I think they did lower my headliner a little bit to take a look at the leak near the dome lights.

Found some other threads about B-Pillar noise as well and it seems like they could be worth exploring:

Took my CX-50 into the local Mazda dealer's service shop and told them about the rattle/vibration noise coming from the front interior part of the car. Mazda localized the noise to the B pillar on the drivers side of the car, and placed some insulation inside the B pillar. After picking up the car, drove around for a while and could not hear the rattle/vibration noise. Looks like Mazda fixed it, will let you know if the noise comes back. Mazda also adjusted the moonroof, since they heard a noise coming from this part of the door. The Mazda service shop spent a couple of days looking for the rattle/vibration noise, and did a great job to find it and fix it.

If you have a rear hatch rattle its probably the plastic horizontal trim on the lower rear hatch that is next to the rear hatch window( the flat part) . Not sure how this happens but the plastic bows up which makes contact with glass. I check it daily and yesterday it happened again after hearing that rattling. It just pops back and boom quietness. So..fyi

See (4) here. I am in a similar boat as you. Your 30 to 40 equates to mine certain speeds and angles. I don't hear it at higher speeds. It definitely sounds more like "plastic" than metal. I suggest you pay close attention to the area I mentioned. See if it helps you to narrow it down.

Thanks. Took my CX-50 to the dealership, and they kept it for a couple of days, and tracked down the noise to the B-pillar on the drivers side, and placed insulation inside the B-pillar. They also fixed a rattle from the panoramic moon roof. They did a great job, and let me use a loaner CX-5 while they had my CX-50
