Opening the tailgate with the engine running

I can’t seem to open the powered tailgate when the engine is running and in Park with the parking brake on. I get the error beep and it does nothing. I have to turn the car off for it to be able to open. This is quite annoying.
Is there a trick to this?

You didn't mention how you tried to open the liftgate. Was it with the fob? I just happened to try that today and it didn't work for me. However, I could open it with the dash mounted and lift gate mounted buttons. I assume the key fob button is disabled when it's running to prevent accidental opening of the liftgate while driving down the road with a fob in your pocket.

No trick, just push the button on the left side of the dash,
Make sure the doors are unlocked
Doors unlocked.Tailgate wouldn’t open using the button on the dash, on the fob, nor the rear push button on the tailgate itself.
That’s happened to me a few times, only thing that works when it happens is to turn off the car and turn back on
You cannot just touch the lower dash button briefly, hold it until it beeps. Walaw it opens.

Sometimes (at least for me) nothing will open it. The fob or the dash Botton or the rear handle. It’s happened to me a few times. Once you shut the car off and restart it everything works. It’s happened to others also

it gets into a state where turning the car off is the only way to open the rear gate.
This just happened to me last night. We got home from the grocery store, I put the vehicle in park (engine still running), pressed and held the button on the dash until I heard the beep. That was it, a beep and then nothing. I turned the engine off and pressed and held the button again. This time the liftgate opened upon hearing the beep. We have never had an issue when using the fob or the button on the liftgate itself.

Push the unlock button first

No tricks. I've had to turn the vehicle off and restart a few times because of this.
Are you on an incline while trying to open the gate with the car running?

No. I've been on a flat surface.
And you are both making sure the vehicle is unlocked and you use the button on the panel to the left of the steering wheel?

Yes, it happens randomly, only fix is a reboot
I have found mine will NOT open with the engine running, in park, sitting in driver's seat with driver door closed. I can either open the driver's door or exit the seat, and the dash button will then open the rear. If door is closed, or I am in seat, after holding for a second, it gives a "NO - you have failed" sort of tone. Not the happy beep when it opens. lol.

But you always have to push and hold the button for a second. Can't just tap it.
