Hey, all… I’ve searched the community for a discussion of this with no luck so I’ll start a new thread.

We rescued a 16-week old Golden boy ‘Fletcher’ (photo for emphasis) 10 days ago. He’s our first dog since losing our 13.5 y.o. Black Lab, Sullivan (my current profile pic), 5 years ago. (I had an 2005 Outback then.) I’m shocked to see that MazdaUSA doesn’t list a pet barrier to separate the cargo area from the passenger area of the CX-50. I bought the car in April of 2022 so let’s call it a year old now. This really surprises me given the “outdoorsy” positioning of the vehicle and it’s the first real concern I’ve had since (pretty much) resolving the cross-bar noise. Worse, I haven’t found any after-market solutions for pet transport either for this model. Fletcher is a motivated, high-energy dog, destined to become a big dog, and some sort of barricade is essential.

Who else has come up against this and how did you solve the problem? I’m sure I can’t be the only one…

Thanks for your thoughts!

The question is do you plan on having the barrier behind the front seats with second row down or with second row up?
Amazon has a boatload of options. The one pictured is the one I had at one time until I went with a full cargo area soft

hammock that provided a block off between the front seats. Kind of dual purpose as a protector and semi effective barrier. For a more hardcore protection the metal version is superior.

I bought this one off Amazon recently. We have 2 German Shepherds and have the 2nd row seat folded down to give them the most space. This option keeps them from coming into the front seat and from standing on the center console. Also I like that the 2 front seats can be in different positions. Beautiful puppy!

Thanks! I’m thinking second row up. That’s how we did it in the Subie with the previous dog and it worked really well. Standard orthopedic beds fit that foot print quite well and no nose prints on the back seat windows for the rare occasions we have passengers back there, lol. I figured I’d have to use factory anchor points somehow. I didn’t realize there were “generic” options available. They may be just fine and certainly seem to be more cost-effective.

I appreciate the feedback. I’m still surprised that, a year in on this model, there is still no factory solution, though.

Well I think a universal adjustable will work well for you.
What we have been finding as owners of the 50 is there is not a lot of aftermarket specific accessories….yet. And may not occur as quick as we want seeing how it is a specific vehicle for just the North American market and not worldwide.

Hi, I am sorry to hear of your loss of Sullivan. That’s never an easy time. I hope you enjoy your new pup. He looks like a rascal.
We are going through the same situation as you are, in deciding how best to transport our dog in our new CX. We definitely don’t want him near our leather seats. In our previous auto, we had a metal divider keeping him in the rear portion of the vehicle. However, it always rattled and did obstruct our rear view somewhat. It also had to be removed each time we lowered the rear seats to carry larger items. This metal barrier also left permanent marks on the roof and floor of the vehicle when it was removed.
Therefore, we are thinking of purchasing a portable dog crate whenever our pup is in the vehicle with us.
We will purchase one that is large enough to permit him to turn around inside and has attachments for both interior food and water dishes. It will also allows us to load him into the vehicle as he ages and jumping into the back of the vehicle becomes hard (painful) for him.
This might be an option for you?

Cute dog. Surely a bundle of energy and hair. I don't have one of those dividers, but I do have a dog seat cover/dog hammock. Its made from a thick durable canvas and has a mild divider between the front and back seats.
