Hi all-

Thank you for letting me join the community discussion. I just picked up my CX-50 TPP this morning from the dealer. Coming from Jeep, this is a whole different animal and so far so good. One problem I do have is the wireless charger. It blinks green for about a minute and then turns red. I see there are some old threads about this topic but I am curious as to whether anyone has received a solution. I appreciate anyone’s thoughts on the subject and look forward to joining future discussions.

Welcome and congrats on your new TPP. What color did you get? Yes, this is a completely different animal from a Jeep. Back in 2019 we decided to go from a CX-5 to a Jeep Compass. Within 6mos my wife hated everything about it. Our daughter assumed partial payments and has been loving the Jeep since then. We sold the Mazda3 our daughter was driving and my wife got another CX-5. This past February she test drove and fell in love with the CX-50 and now has a PFP sitting in the garage.

The wireless charger was high on my list of accessories to add but after seeing so many negative comments, it has been removed. I have to wonder if a big part of the issue is phone size? My S21 Ultra will not sit flat in the area designated for the wireless charger. Knowing this, I can see how charging would be intermittent or non-existent if there isn't a stable connection while driving.

As others have said - and I firmly agree - the main issue is heat shutoff. My phone (an S10) always starts charging fine, but after some time the LED turns red and the phone stops charging - at which point the phone is pretty hot. If I take my phone off for a while, then put it back on, the cycle repeats.

I mean to look into installing a fan under the charger and see if that makes a difference.
@RedBaron Heat shutoff makes perfect sense for those phones that fit in the wireless charging cubby. Interested to see your progress and results of installing that fan.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I got the polymetal gray with black interior. Very sharp looking and extremely comfortable vehicle. Coming from the V-6 Cherokee, I feel that it actually has more pickup. I will be in very good shape if it can last me almost 140k miles like my Jeep.

As to the size of the phone, I have an Iphone 12 Pro and it fits in the compartment. I am going back to the dealer on another matter, so I will have them take a look at it while I am there. I guess that I will just roll with a plug-in charger if they can't fix it.

Welcome and I’m a new owner also and came from a 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited with a v6. I love this CX-50 so much more than the Jeep
Thank you. It certainly is a completely different ride. I test drove the new GC and liked the CX50 a lot better. Not mention the differences in price point...the new GCs are way overpriced.

In my biased opinion, you got the best color combo out there @TED2023 ;) haha Take care of it and 140K will be no issue. My Protege5 had over 190K but had to put her out to pasture due to rust. My sons Mazda3 has over 186K and my current MX-5 is just shy of 150K while my previous MX-5 had over 180K.

If your phone fits in the compartment then it seems like you are experiencing the heat shutoff that @RedBaron mentioned. If so, no known fix but better to have them check in case there is something else going on.

Thanks. That’s great to know. Hoping to get 8-10 years out of this vehicle, so it’s nice to know the track record of your Mazdas. I’m very new to the brand but am impressed about what I’m hearing in terms of reliability. Plus, the CX-50 was much nicer and a better value than the Honda I test drove.

I’m definitely going to have the dealer look at the charger. What’s there to lose? I appreciate the advice.

Most welcome! 8-10 years should be very doable. Might have to endure some teething issues as it is a first year model but I don't foresee anything too major that would prevent longevity as long as it is maintained. I actually converted my SIL back in early 2020. The lease on her second CR-V was up and she was contemplating a third but the dealer wasn't playing nice. We recommended she go to the Mazda dealer and that day she made a deal on a Carbon Edition CX-5 (polymetal grey with a red leather interior - wish they offered this on the CX-50). She has been thrilled with it and if she doesn't buy it out later this year, she is going to get another Mazda.

Nothing to lose at all. Please post whatever they may tell you. It could be beneficial to others having the same issue.
