New to Mazda and not looking back

Hi all,

I have traditionally been a German car guy. My last was a BMW and I killed it by hitting a deer really hard.... BMW and their "subscription for everything" model going forward has me miffed. So no more BMW.

Anyways, I feel like the CX-50 didn't leave me wanting anything, except for speed, but I'm too old to go fast anymore. I think it's time to retire from going fast. But this is a really great vehicle for what I need every day. I live on a lake in the woods on a rough dirt road and they don't like to plow after a noreaster for a day so it's good to have a capable vehicle. I mean I live in the woods of New England after all..
Anyway I take delivery this Thursday.
I got the non Bose sound... Anyone have input on just adding a jbl hub sub or something like that and calling it good enough?

Hi @PracticallyOffRoading welcome to the forum! Congrats on getting your CX-50 this week! Keep us updated on how it goes.

What convinced you to check out the CX-50 after being a fan of German cars? Were you looking at anything else other than the CX-50?

Well I recently retired early and I decided I needed a more efficient car after I hit the deer and the bimmer was dead. I test drove a bunch of cars and I really feel in love with the 2019+ mazda3 hatchback. I didn't feel like I was going to a cheaper car. Slower? Yes, but not cheaper. In fact I really started to like Mazdas focus on The driver's experience. So I started to search for a Mazda3... After a while I started to realize I was only a few grand away from a new car because of the car shortage. Really a suv is a better fit for my lifestyle anyway so I decided to refocus and go test drive more rides.
After settling on Mazda, the wife and I went to the Mazda dealership, walked across the lot and looked at the new cars. Inside they had a cx-50 that was top of the line and my wife loved the look of it immediately. I was very interested too but thought it would be too much money. After we went home I started to look at the non turbo options online and realized they were an option after all. Sweet!
So we went to a dealership and drove the cx-30, cx-5 and cx-50. We both loved the cx-50! The 30 was a little too small, the cx-5 has more of a command seating position where you sit upright like most SUVs, but the cx50 you sat more like you are in a car. Anyways, I ended up getting a polymetal grey with black interior in a preferred plus and she got a machine grey with black interior in the preferred trim. Her Camry gave out recently too and she needed a good car.
As far as the other small SUVs, I was never really interested in them. I guess I liked Lexus SUVs... meh... But with every suv I saw there was something I felt would be annoying if I owned it. The cx50 just fit the bill for me perfectly. Even things like the dark cabin during the night, that dinner find annoying, is something I find attractive.

Congrats on your purchase! I had a 2017 Audi Q7 which had a "vibration issue" in the front, or gear box, or whatever. Audi could not find the cause so I got a good price on it via Cargurus and bought the loaded 50 turbo (premium plus) with Bose. (We really liked the BMW X3 but in the end, the 50 was the winner) The Bose is great! My wife also loved the styling over the 5, but I'm still getting used to sitting so low in an SUV. I liked adjusting to a high sitting position in the Audi, as I feel I have better "road visibility". It's strange to have the driver side window so high in relation to my shoulder. The zoom factor is what I like the most. Step on it and it moves, quickly! And, the leather seats are very soft and in my opinion, quite luxurious.

I switched from a 2018 Camry XSE, that driving position was incredibly low, so the CX-50 is great for me. I have about 500 miles on it, and it really makes you grin when you hit the accelerator. It has a lot of grunt!

Mine is the Polymetal and my wife chose the Machine gray. 😅 We're insane for getting the same car aren't we? Hahaha

Lovely simply lovely 💓 an ironically those are the two color choices I'm still clashing between. I think the machine Gray looks more upscale but a more common color in the car world there's a pair to the polymetal looks a bit more rugged and a more unique color. The struggle is so real 😔 I hope you two enjoy your rides!

Congrats! I have the Turbo PP Polymetal and just love it. I had a Audi Q7. I do, however, like the high seating position of many SUV's, unlike the 50. My wife loves sedans and feels like she's driving a sedan with the 50. Each time I sit down in the drivers seat, I try and move the seat up. So, I'll have to adjust to sitting much lower. But, I love the zoom-zoom and handling in the 50. BTW. I see so many Subaru's on the road these days! I mean, they're everywhere. Has anyone on this site driven any of the Subaru SUV's?

Enjoy your 50's!!

We drove the subi 2022 lineup. They are plenty nice but they have a cheaper materials feel imo. I also think their styling is dated. It's like 1992's version of what 2022 would be. The guy I worked with hated his Forrester. He always complained about it. It was never anything particular, just 'oh I hate my car blah blah blah'.. I think he just didn't like how it drove.

I drove a 2014 crosstrek. It was okay at first but became rather boring to drive. Throttle response was terrible and downright dangerous at times. The CVT mated to the 2.0 boxer engine wasnt too bad since the paddle shifters helped deliver some high RPM when you really needed it. There just wasn’t a lot of power there. Road noise was unbearable over 60mph. The sheet metal and paint seemed really thin. Interior finishes were cheap.

The 50 just seems so planted to the road and has just the right amount of power (w/turbo) when you need it.

pros:
-cost half as much as the 50.
-way better gas mileage despite whatever EPA says.
-was pretty reliable. A/c took a dump but it was covered under warranty.
-she saved me, daughter‘s, and dog‘s ass in a rear end collision. After it got fixed ($7200) I traded her in for $15k (RIP)

Yes, Subaru made my top 3 list. I drove a Outback ST (turbo), quite nice, pretty loaded, you can't go wrong with that, but the CX-50 won me over. The look and quality, especially the interior, is outstanding. Funny how people mention the 50 being low. I had a Camry XSE and this is a step up in riding (seating) height.
Coming from a Audi S3 im pretty impressed with my turbo plus premium. Switching tires to the continental performance AS made a huge difference in cornering and grip. So i get some fun in the corners while enjoying my ventilated seats and plush elevated ride with so much room and with a quiet interior that includes a B+A- sound system..buttons too!
Pro's: fun to drive, lots of space, good visibility, good sound system, good infotainment, fun engine ( use 91/93 its not much more), comfort
Cons: some build quality( paint flaws, plastic fenders having etching or discoloration, minor panel alignments, window trim irregularities)
But i see everything so most wouldn't be bothered with my cons.
Past cars: 1977 vw bus, 1977 vw rabbit, honda civic 1985, honda civic 1995, 2003 vw gti, 2006 Tacoma, 2 STI's 2009 hatch / 2015 sedan, 2016 Audi S3, CX 50

I’m curious about your paint flaws. Orange peel?

Just a few what look like rock chips but they are not from rocks. Ones right in the middle of the hood..again barely noticeable but its there. Then on my rear drivers side door there is maybe a dime size rough spot..weird. They might be able to polish it out but we'll see. It had a blackish smudge to it in which the black came out but still has that roughness to it.
