Wheel Vehicle Car Tire Hood

Mazda CX-5 product manager Mitsuru Wakiie says he's not sure whether there will be a next gen CX-5 coming from Mazda. It's a bit surprising since it's still the most popular Mazda vehicle. But i guess they want to prioritize the CX-50 now.

With 365,135 units sold, the CX-5 was by far Mazda's most popular product last year when total deliveries went down by 13.3 percent to 1,116,107 vehicles. Even though sales of the crossover declined by 4.4 percent year over year, the volume it generated was still more than double compared to the Mazda3, which came in second at 173,619 cars. Despite being the company's best-selling product, it might not live to see a third-generation model.

When asked about what the future has in tow for the CX-5, the model's product manager Mitsuru Wakiie had a surprising answer: "I'm not sure whether we are going to introduce a CX-5 or not, so I can't give you any details." He declined to elaborate, but discontinuing the model after the current generation runs its course would be a surprise seeing as how it's number one in sales by a significant margin.

I think this is a game of semantics. The CX-50 is too polarizing to expect it to replace the volume that the CX-5 does and have it be their bread and butter vehicle.

They are moving away from the single digit number model names. They won’t sell the CX-9 and CX-90 in parallel. There’s no CX-3.

so maybe they do something to better differentiate the 5 and the 50 and they rename the 5 the 40.

A big mistake.
There is nothing firm yet.
But it is getting close to the end of its cycle.
Drop a hybrid or plug in into the CX5 and who knows?
But as has been mentioned the double digit new architecture seems to be the future with Mazda.

The hard part, I assume, is that Mazda is not really a big enough company to pour resources into developing two vehicles that occupy similar spots in the market. In order to keep the CX-5 markedly different from the CX-50, they would need a new platform or keep the already dated CX-5 platform. If they put it on the same platform as the 3, CX-30, and CX-50, I am not really sure how different the two cars would be. So what is the point?

It does seem crazy that Mazda would nix the CX-5 as it is by far their top seller.

I have two thoughts. The first is that the CX-70 will replace the CX-5? Here me out....the CX-50 is similar in size/price to the CX-5 so it will take over that spot in the lineup. The CX-70 is larger but will tie in with Mazda's ongoing goal of becoming a luxury brand, see the CX-90. The hope being that the segment of CX-5 buyers who do not want/like the CX-50 will move up to the new CX-70. This of course could backfire and send those same buyers to another brand. The second is that they will bring the CX-60 to the US market to replace the CX-5. As far as size, it sits between the CX-50 and CX-70 and I would imagine the same could be said for the price.

Maybe Mazda should have named the CX-50 the CX-40 and then used CX-50 for the new CX-5 generation as not to confuse new buyers and current owners looking to move into a new vehicle?

Okay the days of single digit CXs will end, that’s a given. But why not ride the gravy train as long as possible with the tooling paid off and it being a worldwide vehicle unlike the 50.
Apparently CX40 exists I believe I saw somewhere online perhaps in Japan…
If you think about how successful the CX 5 is, I kind of see the similarity with the Ram 1500 Classic still in production. Like I said tooling (robots?) was paid off long ago and they can keep the cost down and profit margin up.
But until the new double digit CXs arrive, the 5 soldiers on being an excellent vehicle.
